Give a hoot. Clean up when others pollute.

Remember this? I remember this campaign SO WELL.

And the message stuck. I hate “littering” even when it’s organic matter. Like bread crumbs.

So while we’re not as good about recycling and doing other “green” things at our house as we’d like to be (yes, we’re working on this), we do our best NOT to litter. I know this isn’t brain surgery, but you’d be surprised how hard a concept this is for some people.

That said, I thought of a perfect application for Sarcastic Mom’s Project Support Beauty in Nature when Ed and I were visiting my parents a few weeks ago.

After taking a tour of the local cave, we took a walk on a nearby trail. And found garbage strewn about. It’s so annoying to be in nature and see such “icky” stuff. As we often do when we’re out and about, especially on hikes, we decided to pick up the trash. This time someone was nice enough to leave a bag up there, too. (Note the sarcasm.)

Ed dutifully picked up the trash.

And I took photos (of course).

This is a small thing to do, but so important.

So support Project Support Beauty in Nature by picking up trash when you’re out and about. But take your own bag. Don’t rely on someone to leave it for you. But if they do, pick that up, too.

I am a big fan of cleaning up liter on walks and try to remember to take a plastic bag with me. I also clean a portion of my highway once every six months or so, as I can’t stand looking at all that crap on the roadside when I drive home. It depresses me to think I live among slobs and people who have no respect for the natural world. So I pretend I don’t, by picking up after them!

Yay for you! :)

Good for you! I was always taught that when you’re out in nature you should leave it cleaner than you found it, and I do my best to do that. (Sadly not that hard in Israel, where the anti-littering campaign hasn’t really kicked off…)

“Leave it cleaner than you found it” is a really GOOD motto!

Good on you! Let’s work together towards a cleaner planet!

Thanks!

Good for you! It’s so important to take the time to clean up. I’ve been getting into the habit of keeping a garbage bag with me in my nap sack so that I can pick up trash on my daily walks.

People are just really gross sometimes.

I think “gross” is an understatement. :(

It’s a good thing to clean up and a BAD thing you find so much trash! :(

This bothers me to no end! I went snorkling while in Mexico last month & I was so upset when I saw a 40-oz can of beer at the bottom! If only everyone understood the importance of keeping our earth clean :(

A beer can. YUCK! :(

That’s awesome that you picked up the trash on your walk. I, too, can not stand garbage in nature. How hard is it really to either carry a garbage bag with you to put your garbage in, or just carry it until you find a true place to throw it away?

Yay for you and Ed, though, on doing more than your part! :D

Thanks… we do plenty of non-green things, too, but… ugh…

Yesterday, between thunderstorms, Zach and I policed the sides of the road along Renwick Rd., which we have made our ‘pet project’. We got two full ‘construction bags’ (you know, those big, black, heavy plastic ones) worth of stuff.

By the way, ‘policing the area’, in the military, means cleaning up. FYI

Wow. That’s a lot of trash. How long were you out there?

i hate littering too and have picked trash after others…

Good for you, Juliana!

Heh. H photographs trash and posts the results on Flickr in the hopes of humiliating the perpetrators and manufacturers into tidying up a bit/ making less packaging to start with.

(Thank you for all the kind comments on my blog. They were much appreciated).

O.k. that’s funny… the posting on Flickr. Ha! :)

Awesome! It makes me feel so good everytime we finish cleaning up an area.

Not so good that it had to be done, but hey… ;-)

Love the photo of Ed!

Thank you… for all of the things you said. :)

If all of us clean up a little, we’ll make a big difference.

I so remember this campaign and the one with smokey the bear. Only you can prevent forest fires. I got mine up too. I pick up litter all the time but I have to say Girl Scout camp is the one place I don’t. The girls are great about taking care of the land.

Good for those girls! And I loved the Smokey the Bear commercials, too.
