A few months ago, I participated in Works for Me Wednesday for a few weeks. Then I realized I don’t have have that many tips to share, so I started to do Wordless Wednesday or a “freestyle” post on Wednesdays. But this week I had a brainwave. So here I am. :) (I thought I should let my readers know the deal, so they don’t wonder if my normally tip-free blog has been taken over by aliens. Moving right along…)
Our dog Toby has mitral valve disease. As a result, it’s even more important to clean his teeth daily. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to remember to do so, and he is terrible about doing it himself.
But I’ve learned recently that if I brush his teeth before bed when I do mine, I remember more often than I don’t. (I’ve forgotten the last two nights, but you get the point.)
If you have kids and it’s easier to remember this way, you might brush the dog’s teeth at the same time your kids’ get their teeth brushed. You’ll teach your children the importance of good oral hygiene for our pets. AND it might convince them if it’s important for the dog, it’s important for them.
Here are some tips for brushing your dog’s teeth.
Just don’t use the chicken-flavored toothpaste on YOUR brush. :)

Mine don’t fight me, TOO MUCH, but they still don’t love it.

You have a lot more energy than I do. And then again the kids would probably like the chicken toothpaste and that would save me some shopping time.

Hey, it’s easier than a trip to McDonald’s. And they might actually like brushing their teeth. The kids, that is. You know, the consumers of Chicken Tenders, etc. Never mind.

They do love it, Nicole. I have to move fast to make sure I get some toothpaste on their TEETH before they lick it all away.
What is your country of origin, if you don’t mind my asking?
For me, the question is - how do you get the critter to tolerate it? Mine fights me claw tooth and nail…literally.
Carol, both of ours just took to it fairly well, so I don’t have much advice for getting an older dog used to it, unfortunately. :(
We brush the dogs’ teeth, but not the cats’. I think we’d have the claw tooth and nail problem with the cats.

Thanks for those tips! I fear that Lola is going to need a professional cleaning because I have been so bad about brushing her teeth.
A couple of years ago, all four of ours needed their teeth cleaned within a few months. Good times. Perhaps if you get Lola’s teeth cleaned professionally, you can get her accustomed to it, so you won’t have to get her teeth cleaned again for a few years. Here’s hoping!

I know… I guess pets feel the same way about chicken-flavored toothpaste that many humans feel about mint- or cinnamon-flavored toothpaste. :)
Somewhere I have a photo of my aunt brushing her poodle’s teeth. Sophie loves having her teeth brushed.
Some do. Ours don’t adore it, but they tolerate it pretty well. I’d love to see that photo if you run across it. :)

We just learned (too late) that our Lhasa is remarkably willing to have her teeth brushed. Makes me feel bad that we waiting 6 years to give it a try. She prefers the chicken toothpaste as well.
Well, you know now, and that’s good. You’re doing better than we are. We KNEW we HAD to brush Toby’s teeth and didn’t until recently.

I have a hard enough time brushing my toddler’s teeth . . . I can’t imagine having to do the dog’s as well!
I remember my parent’s brushing my teeth when I was a toddler. I’m sure your little one doesn’t give you any easier a time than I did for my parents. :(
My dog loves having her teeth brushed! We use one of the oral-b disposable battery powered toothbrushes on her. I think she likes the vibration. It started when she was a pup!
