This week’s Fun Monday host is Mothers of Brothers. The topic is favorite words.
I ADORE words, but I’m unable to come up with many “favorites.” I’d like to think this means I’m more concerned about the message I’m portraying with my words, rather than just knowing and using big words. It’s just as likely I’m having a massive brain cramp. :)
Moving on…
All definitions are from Merriam-Webster.com.
- conundrum — “an intricate and difficult problem.”
- behoove – “to be necessary, proper, or advantageous for <it behooves us to go>”
- dearth — “an inadequate supply : lack <a dearth of evidence>”
- bereft (this is one my husband reminded me of) — “lacking something needed, wanted, or expected —used with of<the book is…completely bereft of an index”
I’m sure I’ll think of more favorites after this is published, but them’s the breaks. :)
So tell us all some of your favorite words.

I love the word conundrum too. It feels more lighthearted than what it means. Cupcake is a great word too. But at the moment the word cruise is really doing it for me. The idea of a holiday on a cruise ship relaxes me just like that.

“Behoove”…makes me think of cows! (Yes, I’m weird)

Do cow parents tell their calves to “behoooooooove” when they leave them with the cowsitter? (Yes, I’m weird, too, but your comment made me smile.)
Love behoove (I think I discovered that word on the show “Square Pegs.” Remember when Sarah Jessica Parker was a nerd?)
And I enjoy prompt and promptly.

I love to use the words plethora and pensive, and love the way that the words wagon and ghost sound as they come out of my mouth. Currently, I am on GRE word overload, so any word that I can define is also a big favorite!

“Plethora” is one of the words I WISH I’d remembered for this post. I LOVE that word!
These are great words!! And totally original. Ive been on many sites today and havent seen these yet — I use them all. Since you like behhove and bereft — do you also like betwixt? I love that one.
Thanks for sharing with us!!
Betwixt” IS a good word. Thanks for such a fun Fun Monday assignment.
Great words! Behoove is a good one too! I’m also more worried about the message than the appearance of grand words. And quite often I find simple words such as “sucks” works perfectly. lol

Yup… sometimes “sucks” sums it up far better than “grand” words would. :) This comment made me smile.
Those are excellent words. I think my favorite word is ‘Bated’ - as in “He waited with bated breath.” I used to think, when I was a kid, that the word was ‘baited’, but came to understand, back when I wrote all of that really bad poetry lo those many years ago, that the word is actually ‘abated’, but the poetic form is ‘bated’. As in held, or restrained or diminished. Not ‘baited’ as in hook, line and sinker.

You make an excellent point about the message that you are portraying. Sometimes I struggle to come up with the right word to fit my meaning in my writing, and I have harder time when speaking. Anyways, I like your words.

I am also a big fan of conundrum. Perhaps because I often find myself in one…..

oh….conundrum is a great word. Fun to say, too. Not fun to be in, however.

Looks like I just added to my vocabulary. Thanks.
I’m glad to be of service, Robocop. :)
I love “behoove” - but I’m never brave enough to use it in a sentence! Doesn’t sound right with my slightly hick accent!
Tiggerlane’s last blog post..Fun Monday - WORD!
Does it sound something like this? Beahooooooove? I’m from Georgia, so I can “say” this. :)
Bereft is a lovely word. Excellent, unusual choice! Thanks for joining in our FM challenge. We’ll be back to read more.
“Unusual” is my middle name. :) I hope you will come see me again soon.
Loving behoove - I wonder if I can work it into a sentence by the end of the day.

Did you manage to do it?
I like conundrum myself but seldom use it in writing or speech. My dad used to use dearth in his vocabulary. Interesting choices.
Hugs and blessings,

My poor vocabulary. I love reading Readers Digest. I never seem to know the words they have in their “boost your vocabulary” section.
I’m finally getting a chance to read all of the blogs from the bloggy carnival and loving what I’m finding.

I’m so glad to see you! :) I’ve not made it around to all my Bloggy Giveaways Carnival entrants either… I still hope to, though.
My husbands favorite word is antidisestablishmentarianism. Try saying that 3 times fast. I have no idea what it means!
