For me shopping for jeans is worse than shopping for a bathing suit. My current lineup of jeans consists of a pair that’s almost too tight to breathe in and a pair of khaki-colored jeans that fits o.k., but that I got a bad stain on during our trip to Rock City a few weeks ago. On Saturday, I’ll see friends I’ve not seen since 1999. I’d rather not greet them in too small or stained jeans, so off to the store I went today after work.
Some of the reasons I find jeans shopping difficult: 1) I am blessed with a naturally thin waist, but I’m much wider at the hips. 2) In the last couple of years, I gained about 7 pounds and then lost those 7 pounds, but I’m still working on toning what’s turned into a muffin top.
I learned today that if my muffin top is completely hidden, the waist has to be right under my ribs or waaaaaay down on my hips. Either scenario causes its own problems, my least favorite of which involve showing the entire world my underwear.
In the end, I left the store with one pair of jeans. This isn’t anything to sneeze at, of course, but I was hoping to find at least two pairs. I wanted a pair that I can just wear out and about on the weekend. What I bought is fairly dressy with a dark wash, so tennis/hiking shoes are a definite fashion “don’t.”
All is not lost, however. I heard of a place called indiDenim that makes custom-made jeans. They start at $150 a pair.
Anyone care to contribute to the Buy Rebecca a Pair of Jeans That Fits Really Well fund?

I still hate bathing suite shopping more….but I feel your pain, girl!
I can handle the shopping for jeans, but what is worse than shopping for a bathing suit? Having to wear it!
Glad you at least found one pair.
It’s a toss up for me too- I hate shopping for both. My favorite jeans are at Ann Taylor Loft, close to perfect every time. I just hate spending the money!
I think bathing suit shopping is way worse.
I used to have fabulous luck at Gap and Old Navy. Then they changed how they made all their jeans, their cuts, and their fabrics, and now I hate them all.
I want to try Ann Taylor jeans, but I can’t conceive of spending that much on jeans right now.
So I go to Kohls, and get the Sonoma brand jeans. For $18. They aren’t the most favorite I’ve ever had, but for $18, they’re good enough.
I will behave, I will behave, I will behave ….
