Until a few weeks ago, I would have NOT fallen into the category of “Yanni fan.” I had no doubt that he was a skilled musician, but his music just wasn’t my thing. I think this was, in part, because he was so OLD. Of course, I ended up marrying someone six months older than Yanni, so… (But I digress.)
In February at Blissdom, when I heard we were going to preview “Yanni Voices, Live from the Forum in Alcapulco,” I was, quite frankly, underwhelmed. Then the music started playing. I was hooked.
Now I have a copy of the Yanni Voices CD, and I REALLY love it. Of the 17 tracks on the CD, there is exactly one I don’t like. My favorite tracks are “Ommagio — Tribute” and “Before the Night Ends.” I even caught my husband singing “Ommagio” a few minutes ago. We don’t speak the language of “Ommagio’s” lyrics (nor that of several of the other songs), but that doesn’t stop either of us from singing along.
One of the neatest parts of the whole deal is that Yanni brought four young singers (Ender Thomas, Chloe, Leslie Mills and Nathan Pacheco) into the mix. They wrote lyrics to go with several old Yanni songs. This is the first time Yanni’s music has been anything but instrumental. (In case you were wondering, Nathan is my favorite. His voice is just OUTstanding.)
So if you’ve not given Yanni a close look — ever or recently — I encourage you to do so. I bet you’ll be glad you did.
(Edited to add: I did receive a free copy of this CD to review. I would have bought it, though. I really did love what I heard at Blissdom.)
