The series finale of “Family Ties” was 20 years ago tonight: 8 p.m. May 14, 1989.
Because the finale was the same night as a surprise party for our youth pastor, who was leaving the church the next month (sob!), I watched the show the following afternoon. I cried. And cried. And cried. My tears dripped all over the VCR remote control. I didn’t wash the tears OFF the remote for quite a while. Pitiful, I know.
I don’t recall crying until the curtain call, specifically when Michael J. Fox came out. (I had a HUGE crush on him then, and have just as big a crush now.) When Meredith Baxter Birney put her hand on his head and then hugged him? Well, I completely lost it. Watching it just now made me weepy all over again. (The 1989 version didn’t have any subtitles, though, as I recall.)
Twenty years later, “Family Ties” is still my favorite television show of all time. I’m not looking for a show to replace it. Ever.

What a fabulous show that was! I always envisioned Tina Yothers as one of my best friends. Truly classic TV!
And 20 years?!? Geez, I feel old!
Ohhh, that made me choke up a little bit. Yikes!
I can’t believe you remember the date. Pretty cool!
Reba, you are so … sentimental.
