Last year on August 10, I blogged about sprouting a doozy of a zit. This year on August 10, I’m recovering from a doozy of a mouth ulcer, one that I thought was “as bad as it was going to get” last Wednesday. By Saturday I was still saying that, with a side of “if I could just remove my cheek, I’d feel much better.” I’m now finally convinced I won’t have the ulcer for the rest of my life after all.
There’s nothing particularly noteworthy about any of this. Like zits, mouth ulcers happen. What I found interesting was the timing.
I tend to get both zits and mouth ulcers after periods of significant stress, and about 10 days after the worst of the stress to be more or less exact. This year, sure enough, I had a stressful period that ended 10 or so days before I started feeling the ulcer. And, while I can’t prove it, I bet I had the same sorts of issues this time last year, pre-zit.
It could be worse: I could react to stress by drinking too much or by doing drugs, among other things. I’ll take my zits and mouth ulcers, along with the nervous stomach and bits of insomnia, any time. Doesn’t make them any more fun, though.

I have considered charting my ‘funks’ (for lack of a better word) because I swear there is a pattern. If only I could find some spare time around here first.

You know, I could just run away with all kinds of ideas about what kind of stress you’d get once a year … but we still have boundaries, after all, and besides .. there’s always Ed. (*Hi*)
So - I hope your stress issue is resolvable without murder or mayhem - else next year perhaps I’ll send you some zit cream and a small bottle of Anbesol. Cover both bases, so to speak.
Winnie had her first mouth ulcer last week - caused I think my losing four teeth and new teeth coming in. She was quite the drama queen about the pain. I should have sent her to stay with you and y’all could have gotten through them together!
